I Can't Believe I Never Thought of This As Self Love

Discover 3 Ways To Be Kind To Yourself

"This random act of kindness was a display of natural human behaviour, who we truly are. Loving kindness. Human beings are naturally and instinctively kind. The two young gentlemen did not give thought for a moment about helping the lady, they just did..."

The other day I was running at the park; oncoming from the other end was a lady pushing a trolly that was full to the brim. The trolly was not balanced with some items sticking out as though they would fall off at any moment. That they did. Two young men walking in front of her immediately turned back and helped her pack up her stuff that were all over the ground. They made sure it was all packed up and steady for her to keep going.

This random act of kindness was a display of natural human behaviour, who we truly are. Loving kindness. Human beings are naturally and instinctively kind. The two young gentlemen did not give thought for a moment about helping the lady, they just did.

There are many examples where something like this happens, I'm sure you can think of some as you are reading this. How about that moment on the highway when someone gives you way into the other lane, or when that person offered you a seat on the train while you were carrying your child.

A book I highly recommend that literary gave me goosebumps when learning of the ways life supports our intention for kindness and the very generous actions that not only bless the receiver but strongly empower the giver is Carolyn Myss’ Invisible Acts of Power: Channeling Grace in Your Everyday Life.

Take a second to think of the moments you've received or given kindness.

Kindness is within us friend. It is a natural part of who we are. I do know of others who naturally give. There’s no question in their mind about being kind to others.

How about the way we treat ourselves?

If we can give others kindness, the question comes, how are we treating ourselves.

I argue, this also lies naturally within us; it’s a something we need to tap into as part of this beautiful journey of loving one self.

If you remember a few weeks ago, I mentioned my lightbulb moment, in episode 1 of the podcast, after reflecting on the verse "love your neighbour as yourself”. I paused and questioned how much I loved myself.

This same question I can ask in terms of showing kindness to ourselves. We can easily show kindness to others, however, this can only go as far as we have the capacity of showing kindness. In a nutshell, it starts with us.

Loving ourselves is the greatest gift we can give ourselves, because when we do, we can live our fullest potential, "be and do what we were born to be and do", we can allow that love to overflow by extending it to others.

It's easy to know that we need to love ourselves to heal, to thrive and live the life we rightfully deserve. The proof comes in doing something. One of the most basic yet profound ways to show ourselves more love is kindness. Kindness to ourselves!

Being kind to ourselves is a pure, simple yet profound way of giving ourselves the love we rightfully deserve.

So often we are looking for external circumstances to make us happy, we are looking outside ourselves. We are waiting for someone to come and be kind to us, to love us, to show us compassion and give us something. There comes a time when we must take ownership and responsibility for our own joy and allow everything else to be. The more we honour ourselves, the outside world miraculously seems to reflect that back to us.

“When you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine” Paulo Coelho.

Be that joy, peace and kindness you are looking for.
